The Dark Knight – Review

Posted by dais  Published in Movie Reviews

I started this review back when the movie was released out in the theaters, but never actually finished. Since the it was just release on DVD I figured I might as well complete it and put it out there.

This movie belonged to the Joker. The title of the movie probably should have been The Joker. Heath Ledger steals the show with his maniacal portrayal of Batman’s arch nemesis. I just have one complaint… I wish he’d been in the movie more! Every scene he was in was captivating. His jerky, sudden movements made you uneasy in your seat. He was villain that made you truly believe that deep down inside he didn’t care about anything or anyone. Not even himself. There was no purpose to his actions… to his crimes. As Alfred said… “Some people just want to watch the world burn” And that in a nutshell is Heath Ledger’s Joker.

Since it’s been so long since I actually saw the movie, I don’t really have much else to say about it. I was disappointed that there weren’t more special effects or more gadgets. However, it is possible that they were there and I was just so captivated by Heath Ledger’s performance that I didn’t notice them.

Mamma Mia! The Movie – Review

Posted by dais  Published in Movie Reviews

mamma mia movie

A must see for any ABBA fans out there. Mamma Mia! is an entertaining on screen musical production that is enjoyable for anyone who… well likes on screen musical productions. :-) It has a good story line that keeps you interested, provides good laughs, and of course good music. Who doesn’t want to just get up and get down when an ABBA song comes on? In fact the lady sitting next to me at the theater could barely control herself. She was singing during the entire movie… very poorly might I add… but I digress… back to the movie…

I haven’t seen the on stage production of Mamma Mia, but I hear it very good. I actually prefer to see musical numbers performed live, but this is the next best thing for those of us who can’t make it out to Broadway. The voices were surprisingly clean and nice… except for Pierce Brosnon. I didn’t really like his voice too much. I think he could only hit one note cleanly and that was the note he used for all his lines. You’d think Q would be able to invent something for 007 to help with his singing ablilities.

Anywho… not too much else to say about this flick. It’s a feel-good movie that ‘s funny and will make you want to get up and be a dancing queen.

X-Files – I Want to Believe Review

Posted by dais  Published in Movie Reviews

It was nice to see Mulder and Scully back. I had forgotten how much I missed Mulder’s quirky sense of humour and Scully’s insistent need to “not believe”. The movie itself, though, was nothing more than a glorified episode. A 2hr special that we didn’t have to wait til ‘next week’ to see the conclusion of.

What was missing from the 2nd big screen production of the X-Files were the special affects we are use to seeing in any Sci-Fi drama series. There were no big explosions, no UFO’s,  no little green men… and not even a trace of black oil. Apparently producers wanted everybody to be able to understand and follow the film…not just the X-Files fanboys. The plot of the film itself adds nothing to the main X-Files storyline of government conspiracy and Mulder’s search for the truth about his abducted sister. Instead it is a stand-alone ‘episode’ which focuses on Mulder’s desire to witness an unxplainable phenomenon which cannot be “programmed, categorized or easily referenced”. And of couse Scully’s there to challenge his belief while she too is struggling with what she believes in.

That’s not to say there isn’t anything in the movie for all the fanboys out there. There are little references to things from the series such as Mulder’s sunflower seeds and of course the poster in his office. Mulder and Scully’s ever revolving relationship is also revealed.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson fall back into their roles quite nicely. They haven’t forgotten how to be Mulder and Scully and the chemistry isn’t forced. It’s like they never left… we just stopped watching and suddenly we’re tunning in again. Lets face it no one could play these roles better than they do.

Final thought… C+ movie… A+ Episode
